A man from Mumbai has claimed that he has been receiving threatening calls from HDFC Bank loan recovery agents after a relative failed to pay an EMI of Rs 3,500. Yash Mehta, a business consultant with Ernst & Young, said that the agent, who identified herself only as Neha, also called up and abused his father and grandfather demanding they pay the EMI instead.
Taking to X, Mehta--an HDFC Bank account holder himself--narrated the incident and said that he had not even met the relative in question and was not aware of any loan that he had taken from the bank. But what bothered him most was that the agent appeared to have his personal details that only the bank was privy to.
"The agent gave me a threat that she will call my dad and grandfather who are in no way related to the person who took EMI," the 27-year-old wrote. "The person has all the details of my location where I work and all. Who has given HDFC Bank the right to breach my privacy when I am not even related to the person?"
Mehta added that he started receiving calls from more than 10 numbers and the loan recovery agent was abusive to him, his father, and his grandfather during the calls.
"They (his family) have been abused very badly too. The lady has contacts that I have and called my father and grandfather and spoke to them in the same language," Mehta wrote, adding that he was receiving multiple calls from different numbers and was being verbally abused by the caller every time he received the calls.

Mehta then filed a complaint with HDFC Bank following which officials promised to look into the matter and revert by January 16.
"I have received a call from their deputy manager and they have said they are looking into the issue but there is no concrete resolution yet from their side," he told Moneycontrol.
Further, in an email that Moneycontrol was given access to, the bank told Mehta, "We assure you that the query raised by you is being looked at on top priority and the bank shall take utmost efforts to ensure an early resolution... We are looking into the same and will revert to you on or before January 16, 2024."
Looking for a faster resolution, he even sent an email to HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan.
Just an update, got email id of the CEO of HDFC Bank and emailed him with all the details.Let's hope if we get a positive response from him. https://t.co/6kUmRAq5wn pic.twitter.com/3Hm2zvyF1M

He added that if the matter is not resolved by the bank he may approach the Mumbai Police and the RBI with the call recordings as evidence to show how abusive the loan recovery agents were to him and his family.
