A policeman from Jammu and Kashmir has claimed that HDFC Bank has a policy against granting loans to police officers and he allegedly came to know about it after applying for a personal loan. Taking to social media, Imtiyaz Hussain said he was shocked to learn of the alleged policy against "the men in khaki".
"Applied for a personal loan in HDFC Bank. Was shocked to know that they don’t provide loans to policemen as a policy. It is so hurtful and insulting to know. The men in khaki who toil day and night in service of our great nation being treated like this should be unacceptable to every citizen," Hussain wrote on X tagging the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the home minister's office.

HDFC Bank responded to the post and said, "Hi Imtiyaz, we would like to clarify that there is no such policy. Many policemen across the country are our esteemed customers, having availed loans from us. We are sorry about your experience and will be in touch with you regarding the issue faced."

But Hussain's post sparked messages from several disgruntled bank customers who claimed that their loans too were rejected due to their professions despite having a steady income and a salary account in the respective banks.
"Journalists and lawyers too. I was refused a car loan 20 years back even though my company had an account there and I had a salary account there!" wrote X user Mohan Sinha (@Mohansinha). "They took signed cheques from me, made me wait two weeks, called me to the bank, and then I heard them talking loudly that they don’t give loans to journalists!"
Another X user Promita Mukherjee (@promzzz) added, "They had the same policy for journalists once upon a time."
A third user Bandit (@BanditOnYour6) pointed out that while salaried employees are denied loans by private banks beleaguered businessmen Nirav Modi, Mehul Chowksi, and Vijay Mallya were granted massive loans and were "allowed to abscond with no repercussions".
