Kamal Haasan further wrote that Vijayakanth lent a helping hand to the poor and fearless courage was his hallmark.

The film and political fraternities were in deep mourning on Thursday, following the death of actor-politician Vijayakanth, who passed away due to pneumonia at the age of 71, in Chennai.

Among those to pass his condolences was veteran actor Kamal Haasan who said that he was "deeply saddened" by Vijayakanth's death and called him "a revolutionary artist"  both in the fields of cinema and politics.

"The news of the death of my beloved brother Vijayakanth, the founder of the National Progressive Dravida Association, a unique actor and captain of Tamil cinema, who was loved by all, is deeply saddened."

"He lived with humanity in every action. He was the creator of innovative ideas in Tamilnadu politics. He had a helping hand extended to the poor. Fearless courage was his hallmark. Vijayakanth, a revolutionary artist who made his mark in both the fields of cinema and politics, will remain forever in our memories. I offer my heartfelt condolences to all his family, volunteers and fans who are grieving his loss," the actor wrote on X (formerly Twitter), as translated from Tamil to English, on Thursday.

Vijayakanth, who was affectionately known as "Captain" for his memorable portrayals of military characters on screen, had encountered health challenges and  reports indicated that the veteran actor faced difficulty in breathing, prompting diagnostic tests that ultimately confirmed a diagnosis of coronavirus infection, as revealed by his party in a recent statement.

Vijayakanth made a foray into politics by founding the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in 2005.
