Hindi film industry gave several blockbuster movies in 2023 with many setting new records at the box office. Kick-starting the year on a high note with Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback film Pathaan, Bollywood saw movies of many big stars minting crores at the box office.

Movies like Jawan, Gadar 2, Tiger 3, Animal and Dunki continued the successful run of Hindi films in theatres. Despite a successful year in 2023, Hindi film industry also disappointed the fans of many well-known stars.

As we bid goodbye to 2023, let’s take a look at the movies that failed to perform at the box office:

Ganapath

Vikas Bahl helmed Ganapath: A Hero Is Born was a box-office disaster. Starring the Heropanti pair of Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon, the action drama failed to entertain the masses. Made on a budget of over 150 crores, the film pocketed a mere 13.02 crores at the box office.

Mission Raniganj

This Akshay Kumar starrer could not create the magic at the theatres that it was expected to deliver. Despite positive word of mouth publicity and good reviews, Mission Raniganj could not draw the audiences to the theatres. The film is based on the real-life story of Jaswant Singh Gill, who rescued 65 miners trapped inside the Raniganj Coalfields in West Bengal in 1989. The rescue drama minted only Rs 34.17 crore at domestic BO on a 55 crore budget.

Selfiee

Movie enthusiasts were excited to watch the uncanny pair of Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in this action comedy directed by Raj Mehta. But unfortunately, Selfiee managed to garner Rs 17.03 crore in India on a budget of approximately Rs 100 crore. Selfiee also starred Diana Penty and Nushratt Bharruccha in important roles.

Kuttey

This black comedy had all the necessary elements of satire, powerful performances, and slapstick one-liners to make the film a hit. However, Kuttey could not impress the masses and became a box-office dud. Even stellar performances from Tabu, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Arjun Kapoor could not make the film a success. Made on a budget of Rs 50 crore, it collected only Rs 5.91 crore.

Thank You For Coming

The film might have touched on some important topics like female sexuality and fantasies but failed to impress movie-goers. Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Kusha Kapila, Shibani Bedi and Dolly Singh, Thank You For Coming did not yield the expected results. The comedy-drama collected only Rs 6.87 crore in India, while it was made on a budget of approximately Rs 45 crore.

 Tejas

Everyone had high hopes for Kangana Ranaut’s aerial action-thriller Tejas. But, the film failed to take off and crashed at the ticket window. The film revolves around the journey of an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer who embarks on a mission to save an Indian spy from Pakistan. The film collected only Rs 6.2 crore at domestic box office.

Dono

Sunny Deol’s son Rajveer Deol and Poonam Dhillon’s daughter Paloma Thakeria made their Bollywood debut with the film Dono. The romantic drama was also the maiden directorial project of Avnish S Barjatya, son of acclaimed filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya. However, their easy-breezy romance could not spark any interest among the audiences and failed to even touch Rs 1 crore mark at the ticket window.

Gumraah

Starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles, Gumraah centres around a murder investigation with two doppelganger suspects. Although Aditya pulled off a strong performance, the film could bring in the bucks. Gumraah’s domestic box office collection stood at only Rs 7.74 crore.

Shehzada

While Kartik Aaryan is known for his charismatic on-screen presence, his charm failed to impress the audiences in Rohit Dhawan’s Shehzada. Starring Kriti Sanon as the female lead, the action comedy failed to strike the right chord with the audiences. Made on an estimated budget of Rs 85 crore, the film garnered only Rs 32.02 crore.

Neeyat

Vidya Balan slipped into the shoes of a detective yet again for this murder mystery. Based on acclaimed writer Agatha Christie’s novel, Neeyat had an exciting premise, full of secrets, lies and mysteries. But, the suspense drama fell short of expectations and collected only Rs 5.79 crore at the box office.
